Hello, creative souls! Welcome to my creative space in Lindy’s!
I’m Priss BlaFu (@artful.layers), and I’m excited to share my recent project, which was inspired by this month’s Color Challenge.
I used the Magicals Steampunk Soiree Set to craft a stunning double-sided tag. This tag will serve as the cover for my tag album, which I already have full of awesome projects from some of the past Lindy’s Color Challenges. So keep an eye on my Instagram because soon I will show you a flip-through of this tag album.
Supplies you’ll need:
- Wooden Tag Cover
- Lindy’s Steampunk Soiree set
- Rice paper with numbers and letters
- Mat Gel Medium or Clear Gesso
- Crackle Paste
- Brushes and palette knives
- Spray bottle with water
- Adhesive and scissors
- Steampunk Embellishments
- Flowers & Leaves die cuts
- A focal point with a Steampunk style
- Silk Ribbons
Step 1: Preparing the wooden tag
First, let’s give our wooden base a good coat of white gesso. This will create a better surface for working with paper and will make the final product look better. After everything is dry, we will apply medium matte gel or decoupage glue evenly over the entire surface. Then, we will carefully place the rice paper or tissue paper with letters and numbers onto the surface and use a nonsticky surface (like plastic) to press it down, ensuring that it sticks well and is free of wrinkles and bubbles.
I used Collage Paper by Tim Holtz, enjoying the creative process as I tore it to carefully cover the bottom and the top of the tag, leaving an inviting empty space in the center that we will soon transform with gorgeous texture in the next step.

Step 2: Adding some texture
Now it’s time to add some 3D texture to the background. Using the empty space in the center, I applied some crackled paste, which not only enhances the visual appeal but also introduces a dynamic element to the piece. This paste will add interest to the backdrop, creating a delightful texture that our lovely Magicals will run through, making their magic. As the crackling paste dries, it will form interesting patterns that can evoke Steampunk and Grunge styles, inviting viewers to explore the intricate details.

Step 3: Enhancing background with Lindy’s Magicals
I selected three striking colors from the Steampunk Soiree set: Apothecary Azure, Bandolier Brown, and Petticoat Plum. Each color is purposefully chosen for a specific area of the tag, creating a stunning harmony. The deep intensity of Petticoat Plum anchors the bottom, where all the action unfolds, while the soothing Apothecary Azure at the top gives the viewer’s eye a place to rest.
For the cracked area, I opted for Bandolier Brown to ensure its rich darkness leaks into every crevice, reinforcing the texture with strength and depth.

Step 4: Bringing light to the crackled area
We are going to need to highlight those wonderful cracks more by bringing light to the ridges (higher areas). To achieve this, I’ve decided to do it using black gold wax, which will not only accentuate the texture but also provide a subtle but elegant shine. This technique will draw attention to the intricate details of the cracks, enhancing their texture, while also adding depth to the cracks thanks to the contrast created.
Wow! We now have a beautiful, super eye-catching background. Don’t you think?

Step 5: Begin the composition
The final step is to arrange the elements to create an interesting composition. This set is designed for a Steampunk Style, so I used a beautiful girl from the Steampunk Chronicles collection by my friend Clara from @13Musas. I also used pieces of scrapbook paper and black cardboard Die Cuts painted with Black Gold wax. The numbers were painted with Top Hat Teal and Yesterday Yellow, which I had left over from the composition I made for the back of the tag.

I had so much fun finishing up the composition! I painted some leaves with Bayou Boogie Gold, added some flowers with Peticoat Plum, and included the message “Be scared and do it anyway.” To tie it all together, we splashed some Bayou Boogie Gold and white gouache. It turned out super gorgeous.
Now it’s time to unveil some stunning close-ups of the most exciting details of the project. I truly hope this sparks your inspiration.

Remember, we have a wonderful Color Challenge this month featuring the set I used for this project. If you want to see more inspiration with it, check here and share your projects with us in our Facebook group.
Now, take a moment to compare the two captivating sides of my tag and help me select which one will truly be the perfect cover for my album!
